Our Story: African Lead, Based, and Inspired

“My whole life I have been growing 2 hectares of cassava.” Says the farmer during our meeting at Kinazi Cassava factory just a couple of hours outside of Kigali. He must have been in his mid fifties. He wore an old hat and his hands were worn down from years of hard farming labour.

“But since Kinazi Cassava built the factory in our area seven years ago, I have grown from 2 hectare to planting 40 hectares. Life is good now. We have built houses and our children are going to school. I can plant more. But the factory is not buying more at the moment.”

Shortly after, I stroll through the factory’s warehouse. Never have I seen so much flour in one place. Thousands of sacks are piled up to the ceiling ready for export. “We cannot shift the flour fast enough”, the warehouse manager explains. If we had more buyers, we could buy even more cassava and help more farmers.”

This short story touched my heart. And yet it is a story I have come across many times since I started working with African nomads and farmers in 1999 in Eritrea, the Sudan, and the Greater Horn of Africa region. Sadly, most stories do not have a happy ending. Two decades later, I decided to build a powerful market engine for farmers, herders, and manufacturers in Africa.

MyKibo, How The Name Was Inspired…

Africa has one powerful resource that is often forgotten: its people. But for generations (and due to many circumstances I won’t get into now) we have collectively played it small. What if we could reach our full potential and climb to the top of our abilities? Let’s reach high! The highest point in Africa is the peak at Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania called Kibo. Kibo inspires each one and every one of us to aim high so we can leave a better Africa behind for generations.

Our Mission in Trading Essential Products

At MyKibo, we have made it our mission to promote Africa‘s agri-business products to the world. When manufacturers and exporters sell more, African farmers can increase their production and generate more and more income for their families and communities.

This is the Vision you support when trading via MyKibo.

But we are not just lifting farmers out of poverty together. We also promote African brands and grow African exports. By doing so, we cut down on Africa’s trade deficit, create jobs, and earn more hard currency for Africa. In short, we build human resource capacities and more money will stay on the continent.

Offsetting Carbon Emissions

Lastly, we also recognize the challenging times we live in. Global pandemics and climate change are the pressing issues of our time. We have since devoted to build Africa’s first agri-business platform that not only trade essential food products and natural skin care, but we also want to help mitigate climate change. We are going green. going green.

At MyKibo, we have committed to offset carbon emissions by planting trees. A percentage of all revenue of MyKibo will be transferred to a non-profit organization called 8 Billion Trees , which is dedicated to cut greenhouse emissions by planting forests across the globe. And guess what, this way, we do not only balance out the emissions you create during your trade (especially when you ship by air), but we also support rural communities who are planting these trees for us. 8 Billion Trees , which is dedicated to cut greenhouse emissions by planting forests across the globe. And guess what, this way, we do not only balance out the emissions you create during your trade (especially when you ship by air), but we also support rural communities who are planting these trees for us.

In future, we also plan to educate African buyers on sustainable packaging and shipping. Because, this will be the big shift in the global economy. And we want to make sure, this time, Africa is not last trying to catch up. We can lead in the transfer to green economies!

Reduced Shipping Rates from Africa

Anyone who has traded with Africa would be aware of the enormously expensive shipping rates for the continent. This is a major disadvantage to fostering trade in Africa. Working on reduced shipping rates with major carriers is hence a key goal at MyKibo.

Helping your business grow via MyKibo is hence not an Ecommerce undertaking, but above all, a project of empowerment and environmental responsibility. A visionary concept to make Africa and our world a better place for generations to come. We invite you to build that vision with us.

Yours,

Dr. Harnet
