True Moringa works directly with a network of 5000 smallholder farmers throughout Ghana to plant over two million moringa trees, providing sustainable livelihoods through access to credit, agricultural training, nutrition programs, and fair wages. Our moringa powder is cultivated on the largest certified organic solar powered farm in West Africa.
We also take the environmental impact of agriculture seriously as we cultivate our moringa. Often, new farms can cause ancient forests to be cleared for agriculture use. For this reason, we source from existing farms or land that has been audited to be degraded land that can be reclaimed. Our nucleus farm near New Longo, Ghana uses solar irrigation that minimizes the use of fossil fuels. Older trees are left standing and buffer zones between the river and farm remain to encourage biodiversity.
Our African Story and the people we impact
Sustainability is at the heart of True Moringa’s mission of wellness for people and the planet. To date, we have planted over 3 million moringa trees to combat deforestation and malnutrition. We work directly with 5000 small farming families throughout Ghana and manage a 150 acre organic regenerative nucleus farm to cultivate our natural ingredients.
Our farm is home to the largest solar irrigation system in West Africa, and our unique model grants land access to women and tribal minorities who have been culturally excluded from tree crop farming. Many of our farmers’ livelihoods formerly depended upon extractive industries – whether through charcoal production, galamsey (illegal gold mining) in the rivers, or by using slash and burn farming practices. Today, they are planting trees rather than cutting them down.
Our field team provides weekly agricultural training on organic and permaculture techniques in addition to financial literacy training to our farmers. Our crop of focus – moringa – is a drought-resistant tree that thrives in arid climates and captures 20x the carbon of other vegetation. We work with farmers to intercrop complementary crops that encourage biodiversity and soil health.
